The Global Fund has appointed a new CEO
Today, the Board of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria appointed a new Executive Director Peter Sands, who previously worked as an executive director of Standard Chartered Bank and, after a successful career in the banking sector, implemented a number of global public health projects.
“We are sure that the new executive director will be able to invest his accumulated experience in the fight of the Global Fund with HIV, tuberculosis and malaria epidemics in the world and lead the work of the Fund to a new level of performance. Being the main recipient of the Global Fund in Ukraine and the representative of the largest patients’ community, we are ready to remain a reliable partner and together achieve the goal: overcome the HIV and tuberculosis epidemics to save thousands of human lives,” says Dmytro Sherembey, the head of the Coordination Council of the All-Ukrainian Network of PLWH.
Peter Sands is currently the chairman of the World Bank’s International Working Group on Financing Pandemic Preparedness and a research fellow at the Harvard Global Health Institute. He also works on research projects in the field of global health and financial regulation at the Mossavar Rahmani Centre for Business and Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School.

If we work together to mobilize funds, build strong health systems and establish effective community responses we will be able to end epidemics, promote prosperity and increase our global health security.”
Peter Sands was born in the United Kingdom. He was educated in Malaysia, the UK, Canada and the United States. He began his career in the UK’s Foreign Office and then joined McKinsey & Company, where he worked for 13 years in the London office, advising clients on financial services and telecommunications.
Sands graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics. He also received a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.
As new Executive Director, Sands will oversee and guide the implementation of the Global Fund’s 2017-2022 strategy aimed at maximizing impact against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and create sustainable health systems.
The Global Fund is an organization of the 21st century designed to accelerate the fight against the epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria. Founded in 2002, the Global Fund is a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and people affected by these diseases.
The Global Fund raises and invests nearly $ 4 billion a year to support programmes implemented by local experts in countries and communities most in need.
